LaTanya and Donald
Visiting LaTanya and Donald in their tidy north Charlotte home, it’s hard to believe that a few short years ago the couple, along with their teenage son, were living out of their car.
LaTanya and Donald were laid off from their jobs within a month of each other in 2010. The bills piled up, and by the time Donald found employment they were being evicted. They found another rental home, but in an unfortunate twist of fate, learned a month later that their landlord was being foreclosed on. The family was homeless once again, with no resources to pay for another move.
Community Link stepped in, and within about a month had the family moved into permanent rental housing.
Through their Community Link social worker, LaTanya and Donald also accessed other community resources, and sharpened their financial management skills.
Today, they are thriving in their rental home and have dreams to once again own a home. LaTanya is furthering her education, and their son has graduated from high school.
That’s what our Homeless to Housing program is all about–giving families the tools so they will have the best chance of sustaining their housing, even after Community Link is no longer helping. “To this day, we still remember and use the knowledge we gained from Community Link,” says LaTanya. We provided the boost, but they persevered.
